Unfinished: The Girl in the Yellow Dress

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

Tish Horton found herself standing in front of the unfinished painting that was sitting in her basement for the past two years. She pondered over the painting from her trip to Giotin, Haiti with Mentor Leaders. She remembered the inspiration behind the painting when she was in Giotin and was walking by the local church.

She recalled she took turn at a nearby clearing to find a group of girls there. The girls had just come back from school which was still quite a ways from their village. The blue barrettes from their school uniform were still on their hair, but they had already changed into their bright and colorful clothing. Tish was awestruck by their composure and how they were standing. She was amazed by the colors of their clothes and their incredible beauty.

As she began to pray that they never change from who God has meant them to be, she immediately thought, "They are so beautiful. God loves them so much." Tish continued to pray that these girls grow up to continue to love Jesus and be a part of overcoming the darkness that envelopes their village at times.

The girls reminded her of how young girls play in the States. They were laughing and playing, but they also carried themselves as established members of the village.

Tish's trips to Haiti were focused usually on the adult women of the village. However on this particular trip, God opened her eyes to see the joyful wonder of the young girls in the village–especially the girl in the yellow dress. Her name is Daylin, and she spent days talking and laughing with Tish. Daylin would cuddle up beside her in the camp at night to listen to the Americans talk and laugh. She was especially animated and her smile would flash across her face. She warmed Tish's heart. When it was time to leave, it was difficult for Tish.

This year, she came across Mentor Leader's recent annual report where none other than Daylin was on page 12! So once again Tish found herself in front of her painting when God revealed to her that her "unfinished" painting had always been finished.

At Tish's art show at the Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson, Kansas, her painting is being displayed and shared with the world for the first time! It became clear to Tish that the title of the painting was to be called "Unfinished."

  • Unfinished Painting

  • Unfinished work in the girls lives by God

  • Tish's time in Giotin is unfinished

"Each time I see this painting, I am drawn back to Giotin. The smells, the sounds, the faces, the laughter, the drama...all of it! I pray that the painting will help others get a taste of God's purpose and goodness in the heart of one small village in the middle of nowhere Haiti. He certainly hasn't let my heart let go in any way!"

To this day, Tish prays diligently for the girl in the yellow dress–Daylin.
